OUR MISSION: |
Welcome The McLean Area Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) cordially welcomes you into its membership. We invite all members and prospective members to attend events and participate in our annual used book sale and other branch projects and special interest groups. At meetings and social events there are opportunities to develop friendships
with others who share your interests. We also want to express your views through
our national AAUW which addresses the particular concerns of the educated
women in our society. Through the national association AAUW has significant
impact on policy and an international presence. We also encourage you to visit
other branches throughout the state and nation. Mission AAUW advances equity for women and girls, through advocacy, education, and
research.
By joining AAUW, you belong to a community that breaks through
educational and economic barriers so that all women have a fair chance.
In principle and in practice, AAUW values and seeks a diverse
membership. There shall be no barriers to full participation in this
organization on the basis of gender. race, creed, age, sexual orientation,
national origin, disability, or class.

All branch members receive the AAUW Outlook (an every—member magazine published quarterly), the Virginia Vision (published three times per year for Virginia AAUW members), the Mc Lean Area Branch News (published monthly for nine months), and the McLean Area Branch Membership Directory.
The Action Fund is the entity that has responsibility for voter education and related political activities by AAUW, including the volunteer Lobby Corps that lobbies Congress on AAUW issues each week Congress is in session.
AAUW Fellowships and Grants AAUW has a long and distinguished history of advancing educational and professional opportunities for women in the United States and around the globe by providing fellowships and grants, primarily for graduate and post-graduate work. AAUW is one of the world's largest sources of funding for graduate women. In the 2009-2010 academic year, AAUW is providing more than $3 million in funding for more than 200 fellowships and grants to outstanding American women and to international women studying in the U.S. as well as to AAUW branches for community action projects. The Legal Advocacy Fund (LAF) LAF, a program of AAUW, exists to prevent and combat sex discrimination and promote gender equity in higher education and the workplace. It does this through financial support or signing on as a “friend of the court” in significant cases in which women have suffered gender based discrimination. It also assists individual women by referring them to a network of lawyers who specialize in discrimination and by providing access to a library of online resources.
Leadership and Training Institute (LTI) The LTI was created to support and operate gender equity programs for AAUW members and nonmembers. One of its primary events is the National Conference for College Women Student Leaders, held annually in Washington, DC to inspire, educate, and provide leadership resources for college women.
