INTERNATIONAL HOSPITALITY

English Conversation and Cultural Exchange

This group is one of two Virginia AAUW branches which support the State Department in hosting and helping diplomatic spouses adjust to life in the United States.  The Arlington branch group meets every other week, and the McLean branch group meets weekly on Wednesday at various members homes along with members of The Hospitality and Information Service (THIS).  The group does not meet in the summer months when school is closed.  These meetings provide an opportunity for local international women to practice their English, meet and get to know Americans and learn more about this country.  It also provides the AAUW volunteers and diplomats a chance to learn more about the people and customs of other countries.

At each meeting from 10-12, refreshments are provided and a program activity is conducted.  For example, every November all volunteers invite our international ladies to a traditional Thanksgiving luncheon.

If you would are interested in this group and would like further information, please contact co-chairs Nan Finken (703) 448-0344 or Frieda Tatem (703) 478-9851.  All branch members are welcome to attend a meeting as a guest of Nan or Frieda and learn more about what the AAUW volunteers do to make this group a success.
